Classic SEO optimizes for the crawler, GEO for citation
Classic Google indexes and ranks pages by keywords and authority. Generative AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) synthesize an answer and sometimes cite the source. GEO is the discipline that increases the odds that you are the source they cite.
It is a search category still taking shape in Romania — explicit demand signals („AI SEO services”, „optimization for ChatGPT”) are only just appearing. Whoever builds correctly starting now has a real head start once demand grows. AI SEO (GEO) adds on top of classic SEO, it does not replace it — the structure and authority rules overlap partly between the two. Even the robots.txt on thenichesociety.ro explicitly allows the question-answering crawlers — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot — alongside Googlebot and Bingbot: we do this on our own site, we do not just recommend it to others.
Structure, facts, sources — no tricks
There is no magic „hack” for GEO. What works is clearly structured content: direct answers to questions (FAQPage schema), specific, verifiable facts (not vague phrasing), and enough context for an AI model to understand exactly what you offer. We deliver SEO LLM AI services mainly through question-answer structure (FAQPage schema) and specific, verifiable facts, not vague marketing phrasing. For the full mechanism behind each engine — Bing, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude — we explain separately what changes with ChatGPT and Gemini, engine by engine.

It adds on, it doesn't replace
GEO does not replace classic SEO — organic Google traffic stays relevant. GEO adds on as a second discovery channel, with rules that partly overlap (structure, authority) and partly are new (answer format). If you do not yet have the classic SEO foundations in place — speed, schema, structured content — GEO is not the immediate priority; the two go hand in hand once the foundation is sorted.

Hard to measure precisely, today
Unlike classic SEO (where you have Google Search Console), measuring visibility in AI engines is still immature — few tools offer reliable data. We're transparent: we work on solid principles, not on reports with made-up figures.
It's not a universal priority
If you don't yet have the classic SEO basics in place (speed, schema, structured content), GEO isn't your immediate priority — the two overlap enough to go hand in hand once basic SEO is sorted.
Classic SEO and GEO, side by side
The two disciplines overlap partly, but they optimize for different things. Classic SEO chases the best possible position in a list of blue links, which crawlers build by indexing whole pages and evaluating domain authority. GEO chases being the cited source inside an answer that is already generated, which models build by extracting short, clearly structured passages from sources considered trustworthy. A site can rank well on Google and, at the same time, be completely invisible in answers generated by ChatGPT or Perplexity, because the two selection mechanisms are not identical.
They are not competing disciplines. The technical foundation — speed, indexing, structure — stays common to both, but the format that wins you the extra citation — verifiable facts, question-answer structure, and a clear entity identity recognized in the knowledge graph — is GEO-specific and is often missing from content optimized only the classic way. The table below sums up the essential differences, as a quick starting point before deciding where to put your first content budget.
| Classic SEO | GEO (SEO for AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | The best possible position in a list of links | The cited source inside an already-generated answer |
| What the engine reads | The whole page, indexed by a crawler | Short passages, extracted for an answer |
| Heavily weighted signal | Keywords, domain authority, backlinks | Verifiable facts, FAQ structure, clear entity |
| How you measure it | Positions and organic traffic, in Search Console | Manual testing, plus the AI panel in Bing Webmaster Tools |
| How they relate | The foundation the AI engines also rest on | Adds on top of classic SEO, does not replace it |

Frequently asked questions
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
It's the discipline of optimizing content for AI-based generative search engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) — as opposed to classic SEO, which optimizes for crawlers and Google rankings. Source: editorial
Does GEO replace classic SEO?
No. It adds to classic SEO — organic traffic from Google remains important. GEO is an additional channel, with partly new rules. Source: editorial
How do I measure whether I show up in ChatGPT's answers?
For now, measurement is immature compared to Google Search Console. The most practical method is periodic manual testing with representative questions from your niche. Source: editorial
Is there already real demand for AI SEO in Romania?
The signals are still small but growing — a category still forming, not a mature one. That's a good reason to build it right now, before it gets crowded.
Do I need to rewrite all my existing content for GEO?
Not necessarily — often restructuring the key pages (FAQ, main services) is enough, not the whole site. Source: editorial
Who else is investing in GEO in Romania?
Very few, for now — part of why we recommend building it right from the start, while the category is still young. Source: editorial
Does thenichesociety.ro allow AI crawlers access, or block them, as a matter of principle?
The robots.txt on thenichesociety.ro explicitly allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot, alongside Googlebot and Bingbot — some of the firms that sell AI visibility services still block these bots by default on their own sites.
